Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is endemic to New Zealand — it doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. But not all NZ GLM is equal. Where it's farmed, how it's processed, and how quickly it gets from sea to capsule all affect the final product. Here's what makes Waitaki-sourced GLM worth knowing about.
The Waitaki River and South Island water quality
The Waitaki River drains a glacial catchment in the South Island, delivering cold, low-nutrient, high-clarity water to the coastline near Oamaru. The Waitaki Coast is classified as part of New Zealand's "Pristine Coast" aquaculture zones — with water quality monitored under some of the world's strictest shellfish farming regulations, administered by MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries).
Why does water quality matter for a supplement? GLM, like all bivalves, filter-feeds from seawater. What goes in the water goes into the mussel. Cold, clean water correlates with a cleaner fatty acid and glycosaminoglycan profile in the final extract — the compounds responsible for GLM's joint-relevant biological activity.
The fatty acid profile that makes GLM different
Standard fish oil provides omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. NZ green-lipped mussel provides EPA plus ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid) — a unique 20-carbon omega-3 found in meaningful concentrations only in Perna canaliculus. ETA has been studied for inhibition of the 5-LOX inflammatory pathway, distinct from the COX-pathway effects of standard omega-3s.
GLM also contains glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) — structural components of cartilage — and furans, a class of compounds thought to contribute to its anti-inflammatory profile.
Processing: why it matters
GLM is highly perishable. Fresh mussels begin oxidising within hours of harvest. Two processing pathways exist:
- Freeze-drying at low temperature: preserves the fatty acid and enzyme profile closest to fresh. Higher cost, better bioactivity.
- Heat processing: cheaper, longer shelf life, but degrades thermolabile components including some fatty acids.
Ask any GLM supplement manufacturer what their processing method is. "Freeze-dried" and a stated processing temperature on the COA are what you're looking for.
Dose: the number most GLM labels hide
A 2021 systematic review (Abshirini et al., PMC8298224) identified 1,000mg of dried GLM extract as the dose associated with improvements in OA-related pain and mobility. Browse the GLM supplements on any NZ pharmacy shelf and count how many list ≥1,000mg dried extract. Very few do.
WIIP Joint Comfort+ contains 1,000mg of NZ-sourced dried green-lipped mussel extract per 2-capsule serving — sourced from the Waitaki Coast.
