If you've searched "best joint supplement NZ" and ended up staring at a wall of fish oil, glucosamine, and turmeric capsules, you're not alone. Dr. Jun Chung — chiropractor and founder of Auckland Wellness Centre — sees joint health questions every single week in clinic. This is what he actually recommends.

What joint supplements actually work (and what doesn't)

Let's be direct. Most joint supplements on NZ shelves fail for one of two reasons: the wrong ingredient, or the right ingredient at too low a dose to matter.

Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) — the NZ advantage

Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is sourced exclusively from New Zealand. The Waitaki Coast on the South Island produces GLM in cold, clean water under some of the world's strictest aquaculture regulations. A 2021 systematic review of randomised controlled trials (Abshirini et al., PMC8298224) found GLM supplementation was associated with improvements in joint pain and mobility in adults with osteoarthritis.

The dose matters. Studies used 1,000mg of dried GLM extract. Many "GLM" products on NZ shelves contain 200–300mg — enough to print it on the label, not enough to replicate the research.

What about glucosamine and chondroitin?

The GAIT trial (2006) found glucosamine + chondroitin worked for moderate-to-severe knee OA but not mild. More recent Cochrane reviews have been less encouraging. It's not that they're useless — it's that the evidence is more mixed than the marketing suggests.

Fish oil vs GLM for joints

Fish oil provides EPA and DHA omega-3s. GLM provides EPA plus ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid) — a fatty acid with additional anti-inflammatory properties not found in standard fish oil. For joint-specific concerns, GLM's fatty acid profile is more targeted.

The role of L-Carnitine and Vitamin D3

Dr. Jun includes L-Carnitine (200mg) in Joint Comfort+ because it supports energy supply to surrounding muscle tissue — relevant for recovery and sustained mobility under load. Vitamin D3 (800 IU) maintains the broader framework joints operate in: bone mineralisation and calcium absorption. NZ winters, office work, and indoor lifestyles mean vitamin D deficiency is common.

What to look for on the label

  • GLM dose: minimum 1,000mg dried extract per serving
  • Source: NZ-origin GLM (not Chinese or Chilean)
  • No proprietary blends (you can't verify the dose)
  • Manufacturing: NZ or Australian GMP-certified facility

Who benefits most

Based on clinic experience, the people who report the clearest benefit from GLM supplementation are:

  • Adults 40+ with morning stiffness that eases through the day
  • Active people — runners, cyclists, gym-goers — with joint load from training
  • People in ACC rehabilitation with ongoing joint involvement
  • Occupational loads: nurses, teachers, tradespeople on their feet all day

Supplements work alongside — not instead of — movement, appropriate load management, and professional care.
